Vista – Launching Games is Slow

Vista has a nice Games Window that you can easily access by clicking on the start button. It is usually located on the right – below “Documents”, “Pictures”, and “Music”.

Sometimes it seems that for no particular reason, launching this Games Window takes a long time. And then when you select a game to launch, such as Spider Solitaire, the game takes a long time to load. There is an easy fix for this.

In this situation, the most probable cause is an updated hardware driver which has potentially altered the performance characteristics of your Vista computer. Vista likes to keep tabs on the performance of various hardware and software components of your machine. Vista provides this information to games and other software so that different algorithms can be used for different-speed machines. When this information becomes obsolete due to driver changes, Vista causes delays in programs or components which request this performance data. The Games Window is one of the affected components.

To speed up the Games Window again, launch the Control Panel and select Classic View, then Performance Information and Tools. Selecting “Update My Score” will cause Vista to re-benchmark your system, update the performance measurements, and speed up your Games again.
